6 Hot IT Jobs in 2012

IT professionals looking for new jobs in 2012 are in luck: The job market is robust across the U.S., and IT salaries in a variety of fields are on the rise. Here are the six IT jobs that IT staffing industry executives expect to be in greatest demand in the coming year. The best part? Many of these jobs are also fun.

Source: http://www.cio.com/article/695585/6_Hot_IT_Jobs_That_Will_Pay_Well_in_2012?page=1&taxonomyId=3123

1. Mobile Application Developers

IT professionals who can develop applications for mobile devices are hands down the hottest commodity in IT these days. IT staffing experts agree that this group will remain in this enviable position through 2012, as companies race to adapt their Websites and apps for smartphones and tablets.
Demand for mobile application developers is obvious on Dice.com, where job postings for Android and iPhone developers are up 129 and 190 percent, respectively, over last year, according to Hill.
The technology division of staffing firm Robert Half International projects starting salaries for mobile application developers to increase 9.1 percent in 2012, to a range of $85,000 to $122,500 per year.
Yoh's Browning says salaries for mobile game developers range from $110,000 to $140,000 per year, but she notes, they tend to prefer to work as free agents. "On average, an Android developer can demand $70 per hour to $100 per hour on a contract," she says.
Adds Hill, "It's never a bad time to be a software developer, especially right now, and if you're a mobile software developer, it's your year."

2. Software Developers

Programmers writing PC-based applications should not feel slighted by their mobile counterparts. Companies need their share of Java, .NET, C#, SharePoint, and Web application developers. Yoh's Browning says Java is hot because it's an open platform that speaks to any back-end system, so large organizations use it to transfer data from legacy systems. Consequently, the salary range for Java developers runs from $60,000 to $150,000 per year, depending on experience. The average contract rate for Java developers is $90 per hour. Base salaries for Web developers range from $61,250 to $99,250 per year, according to Robert Half.

3. User Experience Designers

Because so many of the apps companies are developing—whether for PCs or mobile devices—are customer facing, they need user interface or user experience designers to ensure the apps are fun and intuitive to use. Robert Half anticipates starting salaries for user experience designers to rise 6.7 percent, to between $71,750 and $104,000 per year.

4. IT Security Professionals

As security threats from Duqu to data breaches mount, organizations need IT professionals who can fend off malware makers and cyber thieves. Hill says job ads on Dice.com for various "cyber security" professionals increased a whopping 141 percent in 2011 over the prior year.
Organizations' shift to cloud computing is also spurring the need for infrastructure security professionals, says Prescient Solutions' Irvine. "By putting applications in the cloud, companies have more Internet paths," he says. "They have to have a more secure environment to control entrances and exits to and from their environment."
Irvine also anticipates application security specialists—people who run application scanners through individual Web pages in search of vulnerabilities—will have a good year for finding jobs in 2012.
Robert Half expects base salaries for data security analysts to rise six percent, to a range of $89,000 to $121,500 per year.

5. Data Warehouse Architects, Analysts and Developers

Companies' desire to extract insights from the petabytes of data streaming into their back office systems is driving demand for data warehouse architects, analysts and developers. Q's Bernstein says companies will be making a big push in 2012 to clean and organize their data so that they can better mine it.
Robert Half expects base salaries for data warehouse analysts to climb 6.7 percent, to a range of $88,000 to $119,000 per year in 2012. According to Q, data warehouse developers command average salaries in the range of $120,000 to $135,000 per year or contract rates ranging from $65 to $85 per hour. Data warehouse architects can earn $130,000 to $160,000 per year or $80 (or more, depending on experience) per hour on contract, also according to Q.

6. Infrastructure Professionals

Cloud computing has yet to eliminate IT infrastructure jobs. Now and through 2012, cloud computing—and Windows 7 migrations—are creating demand for network engineers and systems administrators.
Dice.com's Hill says companies are seeking IT professionals who can set up and manage virtual server and virtual storage environments, who can identify which applications are used the most, and who know how to reallocate hard drive storage among those various applications.
The move to Windows 7 is necessitating infrastructure upgrades for some companies, while others eye opportunities to consolidate their data centers and move applications to the cloud, says Sean Ebner, vice president of strategic accounts for Technisource. In the short term, IT departments need infrastructure professionals who can help them plan and execute upgrades and consolidation initiatives, he says.
Network engineers should see their salaries rise 5.8 percent due to increased demand in 2012, to a range of $75,000 to $107,750 per year, according to Robert Half.
"The demand for this talent is so high right now," says Yoh's Browning of these hot IT jobs. "Hiring managers need to move quickly and waste no time putting offers out. There are bidding wars right now for this talent."

Chrome Offline Installer 13

Google Chrome 13

just pushed out Chrome 13 to users everywhere, which includes some bug fixes and one very useful new feature called Instant Pages.
But odds are, you won't even realize it exists.
When you do a Google search from within Chrome 13, Chrome will begin loading the first page result in the background without you knowing it.
Then, when you click the first result (which many people do, like the "I'm Feeling Lucky" button), most of the page will already be loaded.
In effect, searching will be much quicker. Another nice addition is Print Preview support for Windows users.
Chrome generally updates itself jauntily, but to make sure you have the latest version of Chrome, visit the About Chrome settings panel and click "Update Now."
See below for a video of how Instant Pages works:

Awesome screenshot For Chrome

I See this extension this is Pretty Cool And Easy To work And Create lovely customized Screenshots of a web page...(Apple Safari Also Supported)
【Capture 】
1. Capture or clip selected area, or all visible portion, or entire page
2. Support PNG format
3 Support horizontal scroll when capturing

【Annotate & Edit】
1.Annotate it with rectangles, circles, arrows, lines and text
2.Crop and scroll & Show crop area dimension
3. Use eraser to hide sensitive information

【Save & Share】
1. Save to Local
2. One-click to upload to awesomescreenshot.com and get a shareable link
3. Save very large image, by pass the 2M limit. No crash any more.

【For Those with Privacy Concern 】
Chrome will alert you that the extension may access all your data.
Here is the whole story.
1. We use chrome's NPAPI (Which has the ability to access some local data) to work around a Chrome issue http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=45395 which may crash the extension when you save a large ( >2M) screenshot. The new version also delivers a much better "Saving screenshot" experience. If you still concern about privacy, you can install a lite version we designed specially for you http://bit.ly/iY6qPz .

2. The plugin has the ability to access your data, but it never does it. It only access your screenshot data. Chrome shows the warning even if extensions do not access any private data. We are also normal internet users like you, we hate the bad behaviour. We also believe in "Don't be evil".

【Notice】
1. Awesome screenshot can't be installed in Chromebook ( CR-48) because it uses NPAPI which doesn't supported in ChromeBook. However, we designed a special version for Chromebook http://bit.ly/iY6qPz .
2. Due to Chrome's screenshot API, it can't get the screenshot of Flash.
3. If you can't find awesome screenshot icon in your browser, please re-enable it here chrome://extensions/ .

Google Chrome 11 adds speech-to-text feature

By Suzanne Choney

Google's increasingly popular Web browser, Chrome, now includes built-in speech-to-text translation with Chrome version 11, now available for download .
The tech giant has been busy fixing some bugs in Chrome, but also adding new features, with the speech-to-text ability the most exciting. As Google says on its Chrome blog , using the Web browser you can now:
... translate what you say into other languages with Google Translate. If you’re translating from English, just click on the microphone on the bottom right of the input box, speak your text, and choose the language you want to translate to. In fact, you can even click on the “Listen” feature to hear the translated words spoken back to you!
"You can talk to your bank's computer, so why not your own?" writes PC Magazine . "This is possible with the built-in speech recognition available on Windows and Mac machines, but Google's vision of making every app a Web app is now one step closer to reality with speech input HTML."
You won't see the microphone unless you've updated Chrome to 11. "No other current browser displays the microphone icon. In quick tests, the speech input worked perfectly, though it only accepts English."
Google also said it paid "a record $16,500 of rewards " to those who came up with fixes for various bugs in the Web browser.
Chrome, which competes with other Web browsers like Microsoft's Internet Explorer, Mozilla's Firefox and Apple's Safari, "surpassed" a 10 percent share of "global browser usage" for the first time in January, according to Net Applications .

Improve BroadBand Speed

I just found this article which discusses 3 important tips to significantly speed up your internet access through BSNL Dataone broadband connection / most other BroadBand connections like Reliance or Tata Indicom or Sify Broadband .

Tip 1:
One of the major problems with BSNL Dataone Broadband connection is the DNS servers they provide by default. Most of the time they are very slow and sometimes they fail to respond. I noticed that I am starting to spend a significant amount of time in DNS resolution with Dataone connection, often it is larger than the time it takes to actually get the reponse. Here is a simple solution to significantly speed up your DNS resolution.
Open up the network connection profile and edit TCP/IP settings. In the DNS server address fields, specify the following DNS server addresses:

Google DNS :
8.8.8.8
8.8.8.4

Open DNS :
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

Disconnect the connection and then connect again. You are done.
This specifies third party DNS servers which are significantly faster than BSNL Dataone’s DNS servers.

Tip 2:
Firefox users can use FlashBlock extension to prevent downloading of Flash content by default, thereby significantly speeding up browsing experience. You can click on the placeholder icon to display the original Flash content any time. This is more of a passive tip in that reduces data usage to improve your overall experience.

Tip 3:
You can try to increase your broadband bandwidth tweaking the TCP/IP parameters. The process is simplified by using TCPOptimizer, a free tool. It helped me a lot but your mileage may vary.

Also, there's nice little tweak for XP. Microsoft reserve 20% of your available bandwidth for their own purposes. This also affects your Broadband peformance. You can get back this 20% as follows:
Click Start-->Run-->type "gpedit.msc" without the "
This opens the group policy editor. Then go to:
Local Computer Policy-->Computer Configuration-->Administrative Templates-->Network-->QOS Packet Scheduler-->
Limit Reservable Bandwidth
Double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth. It will say it is not configured, but the truth is under the 'Explain' tab :
How to easily speed up your BSNL BroadBand Connection
"By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this
setting to override the default."
So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO.
This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20%.

In Vista and windows 7

Through the Group Policy Object Editor

NOTE: This method is only available for the Vista Business, Ultimate, and Enterprise editions. See Method Two or Method Three below for the Vista Home Basic and Home Premium editions.
1. Open the Local Group Policy Editor.

2. In the left pane, click on Computer Configuration, Administrative Templates, and Network, QoS Packet Scheduler.
(See screenshot below)

3. In the right pane, right click on Limit reservable bandwidth and click on Properties. (See screenshot above)

4. For Default Reserved Bandwidth
A) Dot Disabled or Not Configured and click on OK. (See screenshot below step 5B)
NOTE: If you disable this setting or do not configure it, the system uses the default value of 20 percent of the connection.
5. To Change the Reserved Bandwidth
A) Dot Enabled.

B) Next to Bandwidth Limit (%), type in a percentage to use from 0 to 100 and click on OK.
NOTE: If you change the percentage to 0, then this will disable the reserved bandwidth.

6. Close the Group Policy Object Editor window.

7. Restart the computer to apply changes.

Troubleshooting Slow Internet Connections

Tips for Troubleshooting Slow Internet Connections

This checklist describes common causes for slow Internet connections. A poor-performing connection can be caused by broadband router configuration issues, wireless interference, or any of several other technical issues with your home network. Follow these steps to diagnose slow Internet connections.

1. Broadband Router Settings
As the centerpiece of a network, a broadband router can be responsible for slow Internet connections if configured improperly. For example, the MTU setting of your router will lead to performance issues if set too high or too low. Ensure your router's settings are all consistent with the manufacturer's and your Internet Service Provider (ISP)recommendations. Carefully record any changes you make to your router's configuration so that you can undo them later if necessary.

2. Wireless Signal Interference
Wi-Fi and other types of wireless connections may perform poorly due to signal interference, which requires computers to continually resend messages to overcome signal issues. Household appliances and even your neighbors' wireless networks can interfere with your computers. To avoid slow Internet connections due to signal interference, reposition your router for better performance and change your Wi-Fi channel number.

3. Internet Worms
An Internet worm is a malicious software program that spreads through computer networks. If any of your computers are infected by an Internet worm, they may begin spontaneously generating network traffic without your knowledge, causing your Internet connection to appear slow. Run antivirus software regularly to diagnose and remove these worms from your computers.

4. Running Background Applications
Some software applications you install on a computer run in the background, quietly consuming network resources. Unlike worms, these are programs designed to do useful work. Peer to peer (P2P) programs in particular can heavily utilize your network and cause connections to appear slow. It's easy to forget these applications are running. Always check computers for any programs running in the background when troubleshooting a slow network.

5. Faulty Network Equipment
When routers, modems or cables fail, they typically won't support connections. Certain technical glitches in network equipment, however, adversely affect performance even though connections are maintained. To troubleshoot potentially faulty equipment, temporarily re-arrange and re-configure your gear while experimenting with different configurations. Try bypassing the router, swapping cables and changing network adaptersto isolate the slow performance to a specific component of the system.

6. Service Provider Issues
Internet speed ultimately depends on the service provider. Your ISP may change their network's configuration, or suffer technical difficulties, that inadvertently cause your Internet connection to run slow. ISPs may also intentionally install filters or controls on the network that can lower your performance. Don't hesitate to contact your service provider if you suspect they are responsible for a slow Internet connection.
